Mar Brisa
Community Garden

Planting roots, growing community

The Mar Brisa Roots Committee is proposing a community garden for our neighborhood — a place to grow fresh food, gather with neighbors, and enjoy a shared green space right here at home.

Where Mar Brisa grows together

We’re transforming an underutilized lot near an existing recreation area into a vibrant, productive community garden. The design centers around a gathering space surrounded by raised planter beds, with room for an orchard, flowers, and more.

🌱

Raised planter beds

Cedar beds for growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers, tended by participating residents who share in the harvest.

🍴

Gathering space

A rectangular picnic table at the center, extendable with folding tables for community events and potlucks.

🍎

Fruit orchard

Avocado, citrus, persimmon, guava, and pomegranate trees on the adjacent slope.

🌻

Flowers & habitat

Roses, hummingbird-friendly plants, a butterfly waystation, and a bird bath fountain.

🪴

Organic zone

In-ground organic beds and a three-bin composting system. No synthetic chemicals, ever.

🌿

Community features

Seed library, germination box, herb spiral, kids’ bed, QR plant markers, and a chalkboard message board.

🥒

Shared & donated harvest

Fruit trees, herb spiral, and kids’ bed are open to all residents. Excess produce is donated to local food banks.

~2,200 sq ft of garden + 1,000 sq ft of orchard

The trapezoidal lot sits adjacent to existing community infrastructure, giving us access to existing water and power infrastructure. The natural slope above the lot provides ideal drainage for fruit trees.

Built in phases, usable from day one

Each phase delivers a complete, functional garden. If progress pauses at any point, the community is left with something real — not an unfinished project.

1
Core

Working garden

Water and power tied into existing utility lines, raised beds built and planted, picnic table, basic fencing, irrigation timer. Done — people can garden and gather.

2
Core

Orchard & gathering

Fruit trees planted on the slope, garden entrance arbor, gravel paths, seed library, chalkboard, and QR plant markers.

3
Growth

Ecosystem & polish

Organic zone, compost bins, tool shed, flower section with roses and hummingbird plants, butterfly waystation, herb spiral, kids’ bed, espalier fruit tree.

Stretch

Future enhancements

Victorian lamp posts, decorative rocks, upgraded DG or concrete-with-moss pathways, bird bath fountain and water feature.

Community and environmental benefits

A working community garden delivers value far beyond the beds. Mar Brisa is designed to support environmental stewardship, pollinator habitat, education, and food access alongside its role as a neighborhood gathering place.

Pollinator habitat

A certified Monarch Watch butterfly waystation, hummingbird plants, and native nectar species support local pollinators and the broader regional ecosystem.

Organic-only growing

No synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides anywhere in the garden — a demonstration of sustainable urban agriculture practices.

Food access

Communal fruit trees and shared harvest beds are open to all residents. Excess produce is donated to local food banks.

Environmental education

A dedicated kids’ bed and QR-coded plant markers introduce neighborhood children to organic growing, plant biology, and seasonal food cycles.

Waste diversion

A three-bin composting system processes community green waste on site, reducing what goes to landfill.

Connection across generations

Shared workdays, a communal picnic table, and intergenerational programming build relationships across the neighborhood.
